No Man's Land
At the end of August, 2013 the British military base near Mönchengladbach was closed down and after 40 years of service my parents were among the last to leave. Left deserted, it is now only a place of memory, a no man's land. Ghosts haunt the windows and nature is re-staging its own conquest after 68 years.
Deriving from direct observation of the slow decline of the base, these paintings are ‘collages’ of memory and place, depicting dreamlike scenes. The fantastical, surreal atmosphere evokes memories of childhood, emphasising the passage of time and giving a melancholic feel to the work.
This is an ongoing collection of work and paintings will be added as and when they are finished.
