August-Land
August-Land
August-Land, transports me back to the August countryside around my family’s home in Monmouthshire, Wales. Hedgerows and lanes, ploughed fields, and open skies as far as the eye can see. And sheep of course. August for the month, but august in the other sense of the word, too - the adjective, meaning noble, venerable, majestic, dignified, and grand. And to me, this kind of countryside is exactly that - a landscape that has evolved and developed over thousands of years, that has been shaped by humans and all the other creatures that we share it with. It’s arable, quiet, perhaps unassuming, but still beautiful - and I can’t think of anything more dignified than this glorious tree that we always stop to admire on our way up the lane that leads to the pond.
