Hall of Lost Footsteps - Linoprint

€155.00

Hall of Lost Footsteps is a signed, numbered limited edition print. This version - ‘V1’ - consists of only 8 prints and is printed in dark blue ink on Japanese silk paper, which gives the piece a wonderful luminosity.

This print was inspired by a walk through the beech forest in the Jasmund National Park on the beautiful Island of Rügen. A striking feature of beech forests is the lack of undergrowth, which creates the feeling of wandering through a vast, natural hall, where endless columns of trees stretch on into the distance. It was my first time in such a forest and it was a magical, otherworldly experience.

This sensation brought to mind something I had read, which inspired the title of this piece. The Salle des Pas Perdus, or the Hall of Lost Footsteps, was a hall in the Palace of Poitiers, built between 1191 and 1204 by Eleanor of Aquitaine, and where, according to legend, ‘a single footfall was silenced by the vastness of its space’. The name perfectly captures the profound stillness and space that I felt in that unforgettable forest and so felt like the perfect title.

I hope that this piece brings a touch of the same magic I felt in that forest to you, allowing you to experience something of the wonder and serenity that inspired it.
